Marianne Ronez, Viola d'amore with Affetti Musicali & Monika Mauch
Winter & Winter 910 096-2
This is a wonderful and delightful CD of viola d'amore music, performed by outstanding players. Marianne Ronez is unquestionably the star here, but the other performers are first rate as well. The other players, most of whom make up the group Affetti Musicali, are Ludwig Hampe, viola d'amore, Arno Jochem, viola da gamba, Michael Freimuth, theorbo, Ernst Kubitschek, harpsichord, and Monika Mauch, soprano. Ms. Ronez is known to early music circles as an exceptional violinist, viola d'amore player and teacher. She has a superior technique and an excellent understanding of baroque and classical styles. She makes it a practice to play from copies of the original MSS, usually from scordatura notation.
On this fine CD are the following works:
Heinrich Ignatz Franciscus Biber: Partia VII for Two Violas d'amore and basso continuo. Anton Huberty : Aria for soprano and viola d'amore. Anton Huberty: Duetto for Two Violas d'amore. Johann Caspar Ganspeck: Aria for soprano, two violas d'amore and basso continuo. Attilio Ariosti: Cantata, Pur al fin gentil viola for solo voce, viola d'amore and basso continuo. Wilhelm Ganspeckh: Partita for Two Violas d'amore and basso continuo. In addition to some attractive photos of violas d'amore, there are good program notes about the music, the full texts of the vocal music, the scordatura tunings of each piece and a detailed listing of all the five violas d'amore used by Ronez and Hampe and the other performers. The program notes are in both English and German.Ms. Mauch is a superior singer and the music is a joy to listen to. This CD is a must for all lovers of the viola d'amore.
